Naming Ceremony for the first two
of the Q-Flex LNG Vessels
On Friday 7th September, a Naming Ceremony was held to celebrate the naming of 2 Q-Flex LNG vessels, the Al Ruwais and Al Salfliya, at Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Ltd.'s shipyard in Geoje Island, Korea. These 2 vessels are the first of their class to be named. With a capacity of 210,000 cubic meters, they are the largest LNG carriers constructed to date and have a capacity approximately 50% larger than conventional ships. The ceremony, which marked another “first” in the life of Qatar Gas Transport Company Ltd. (Nakilat), was attended by His Excellency Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, Deputy Premier the Minister of Energy and Industry and Chairman of Nakilat, together with Mr. Neil Duffin, President of ExxonMobil Development Company, in addition to other members of Nakilat’s senior management, Qatargas II’s management team and representatives of Qatar Petroleum and ExxonMobil as well as Nakilat’s joint venture partners, CommerzLeasing and Pronav.
“We are delighted that the first of these 2 Q-Flex vessels are being delivered safely and on time. It is an exciting time for everyone involved in Qatar’s LNG export program and we look forward to returning next year for the delivery of the first of the even larger Q-Max ships”, said the Deputy Premier.
These 2 vessels, along with 6 additional Q-flex ships, will be utilized for Train 4 of the Qatar Liquefied Gas Company Limited (II) (Qatargas II) project, a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum, ExxonMobil and Total. The Al Ruwais and Al Safliya are owned through joint ventures between Nakilat, Pronav and other German investment companies. In total, contracts have been signed for the construction of 31 Q-Flex ships, 14 Q-Max LNG vessels and 9 conventional vessels, totalling 54 vessels, all of which will be wholly-owned either by Nakilat or by joint ventures in which Nakilat participates.
