Naming Ceremony for the third of the Q-Flex LNG Vessels
On Monday 10th September, a Naming Ceremony was held to celebrate the naming of a Q-Flex LNG vessel, the Al Gattara, at Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd.’s Ulsan shipyard in Korea. This vessel is the third of its class to be named. With a capacity of 216,000 cubic meters, it is one of the largest LNG carriers constructed to date and has a capacity approximately 50% larger than conventional ships. The ceremony, which marked another “first” in the life of Qatar Gas Transport Company Ltd. (Nakilat), was attended by senior officials of Nakilat, Qatargas II’s management team and representatives of Qatar Petroleum and ExxonMobil as well as Nakilat’s joint venture partner, Overseas Shipholding Group (OSG).
“The naming of the first 4 Q-Flex ships this month, 2 last Friday, 1 today and 1 tomorrow marks an important milestone in our continuous successful LNG story in Qatar, with the huge developments to produce over 77 million tons of LNG per year and the construction of huge fleet to transport these volumes around the world, we can produce, liquefy and transport this clean energy to our customers in an economically, sound, environmentally sensitive and safe way”, said Muhammad Ghannam, Managing Director of Nakilat.
This vessel along with 7 additional Q-Flex ships, will be utilized for Train 4 of the Qatargas II project, a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum, ExxonMobil and Total. The Al Gattara is owned through a joint venture between Nakilat and OSG and is the first of four Q-Flex vessels to be named in this relationship. In total, contracts have been signed for the construction of some 31 Q-Flex ships, 14 Q-Max LNG vessels and 9 conventional vessels, totalling 54 vessels, all of which will be wholly owned either by Nakilat or by joint ventures in which Nakilat participates
