Naming Ceremony for the fourth of the Q-Flex LNG Vessels

On Tuesday 11th September, a Naming Ceremony was held to celebrate the naming of a Q-Flex LNG vessel, the Tembek, at Samsung Heavy Industries Co. Ltd.’s Geoje Island shipyard in Korea. This vessel is the fourth of its class to be named. With a capacity of 216,000 cubic meters, it is one of the largest LNG carriers constructed to date and has a capacity approximately 50% larger than conventional ships. The ceremony, which marked another “first” in the life of Qatar Gas Transport Company Ltd. (Nakilat), was attended by senior officials of Nakilat, Qatargas II’s management team and representatives of Qatar Petroleum and ExxonMobil as well as Nakilat’s joint venture partner, Overseas Shipholding Group (OSG).

“The LNG we plan to deliver with the 4 ships we named since 7th September is essential to the lives and livelihoods of the entire world population. With our huge fleet of 54 LNG ships and LNG production of over 77 million tons per year from Qatar, we will provide the world with ready access to clean and affordable energy which will be the foundation for steady and sustainable economic growth around the world”, said Muhammad Ghannam, Managing Director of Nakilat.

This vessel along with 7 additional Q-Flex ships, will be utilized in the Qatargas II Train 4 project, a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum and ExxonMobil. The Tembek is owned through a joint venture between Nakilat and OSG and is the second of 4 Q-Flex vessels to be named in this relationship. In total, contracts have been signed for the construction of some 31 Q-Flex ships, 14 Q-Max LNG vessels and 9 conventional vessels, totalling 54 vessels, all of which will be wholly owned by either Nakilat or by joint ventures in which Nakilat participates
