Nakilat Ship Repair Yard Project Celebrates Outstanding Safety Record
5 Million Safe Man-Hours

Doha, Qatar, June 25, 2009 – Nakilat’s Ship Repair Yard Project celebrated achieving an aggregate of 5 Million Safe Man-Hours Incident Free on May 09, 2009. At a Safety Award Ceremony held at the Nakilat Ship Repair Yard Site in the Port of Ras Laffan, Nakilat’s Managing Director, Mr. Muhammed Ghannam congratulated all Nakilat employees and site contractors who contributed to the achievement of the outstanding safety milestone.

Mr. Ghannam said, “The achievement of 5 Million Safe Man-Hours is credited to the dedication and commitment of every individual employee and site contractor who practices safe work habits, behavior and actions. The achievement of this safety milestone shows all of us that by working together we can create a safe work environment where no one gets hurt and where safety in the workplace is job one.”

During the safety award ceremony Mr. Ghannam presented safety awards to the seven site contractors, two consulting engineering firms and to Nakilat Director, Facilities Development, Mr. Stephen May, who accepted the award on behalf of the Nakilat Ship Repair Yard Project Task Force.

Once construction is completed, Nakilat and Singapore-based Keppel Offshore & Marine Limited, through their joint venture Nakilat-Keppel Offshore & Marine (N-KOM) will jointly develop the world-class shipyard facility in the Port of Ras Laffan.

The joint venture signifies a landmark partnership between the worlds’ leading transporter of LNG and the global leader in ship repair, ship conversion and construction of offshore drilling rigs. The new shipyard facility in Ras Laffan is designed and being constructed in accordance with international best practice.

It will become a centre of excellence for the repair and maintenance of very large ships (e.g. LNGC, VLCC), repair of small and medium-sized ships, fabrication and maintenance of offshore structures and components for land-based petrochemical plant, and construction of high-value small ships (e.g. offshore supply vessels, coastal defense and patrol boats, luxury yachts). Keppel will manage the operations of the new shipyard and will also draw on its local knowledge of the Middle East to enhance the cost-efficiency and operational effectiveness for the joint venture with Nakilat.
